Based on the autobiographical comic strip books by the Iranian-born Marjane Satrapi. She grew up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. As she gets older, her boldness causes her parents to send her to school in Austria for security reasons, where she endures the typical ordeals of a teenager. After school she returns to Iran to be close to her family, but there she realizes that while she is deeply Iranian, she cannot live in Iran.
