Igor Kovalyov Mixed Media
Drawings of jury member Igor Kovalyov will be on display in LHC Das Kabinett. Like his films they are characterised by a vivid, deeply personal imagination and a profusion of graphic detail.
Competition features
Nine films have been selected for the international competition for features. Together they present a journey around the world, from Iceland to Colombia and from the United Kingdom to Singapore and Japan.
Features extra
Grab your last chance to watch a couple of top films from the past year on the silver screen: for instance Oscar winner Rango. Furthermore there are some brand new previews, like the French films Un Monstre à Paris and the beautiful closing film Le Tableau.
Competition shorts
The two categories of the international competition for shorts are narrative and non-narrative. From over 800 entries, 49 productions were selected (33 narrative and 16 non-narrative).
Competition European student films
New developments and fresh ideas often spring from the minds of students, which makes this competition an adventurous programme section. The European student film competition prided itself in no fewer than 366 entries, 53 of which were selected.
Competition Dutch animation
A selection committee made a selection from 120 Dutch entries. 48 titles passed the test. The committee was made up of Sjors Houkes, Hasse van Nunen en Nynke Rusticus. The audience will eventually designate the winner.
HAFF Junior
The national children’s jury of the festival is called MovieSquad HAFF Junior. Prior to the festival, children from eight to twelve years old could cast a vote for their favourite. On Sunday, directly following the screening of 12:30 in Louis Hartlooper Complex 2, the winner will be announced.
HAFFTube
And the winner is... Bugging the Bug van Velislav Kazakov (Cuckoo Animation, Canada), about a ladybug in a world of comic catastrophe. The runner-up - who came very close! - is Flowers of Chaos of Junyong Wu (Hongkong).
HAFFgames
Games offer a fresh look at the animation phenomenon. For the first time, the two disciplines are brought together and made accessible on this scale. An up-to-date programme, aimed at the future, provides a glimpse behind the scenes.
Bash of Stash!
Recent gems from Stash’s online archive, one with the best of 2011 and one with music videos. These TV commercials, music videos, virals, trailers, broadcast design and the occasional short offer an impressive cross section of current corporate animation.
Cartoon d'Or 2011
The finalists and the winner of the Cartoon d’Or 2011: Der Kleine und das Biest (The Little Boy and the Beast)of Uwe Heidschötter and Johannes Weiland (Germany).
Independent China
China is going through a tempestuous development, in the field of art in general and animation in particular. The Independent China programme section shows work by the new generation of single-minded Chinese filmmakers and fine artists, who have been working very hard over the last two decades.
Winners programme: Kei Oyama’s Choice
Kei Oyama won the Dioraphte Grand Prix HAFF 2010 for his narrative short Hand Soap. He had carte blanche to compile a programme of his own.
Jury presentation
The jury members of the competitions present their work. Films of renowned filmmakers and work by visual artists that are working in the world of animation. The mix of everything from personal films to a commercial shows the diversity of the jury and of animation as a medium.
School in Focus: Utrecht School of the Arts
Animation students from the Utrecht School of the Arts present films that inspired them and screen their own work. They will give a full explanation about the way they have incorporated the inspiration they gained into their own animations.
School in Focus: Middlesex University
Since the early 1980s, students from Middlesex University have gone on to become some of the biggest names in the UK animation scene.
Heartstrings
What’s the thing with animation? In three talkshows, animation filmmakers and art connoisseurs present their favourite films.

CfH-HAFF Festival Fellow Paul Ward
In collaboration with the Department of Media and Culture Studies and the Centre for the Humanities of Utrecht University. Paul Ward, active as lecturer at the Arts University College Bournemouth, is the first CfH-HAFF Festival Fellow. In March and April there will be various workshops and seminars for students, scientist and enthusiasts. During the festival he will present three programmes.
Animation Concept Cooker
Excellent concepts lead to excellent films. This is especially true for short animation films in which form and content are intertwined like two strands of DNA. In the HAFF master class “Animation Concept Cooker 2012” animation professionals teach how to develop ideas into strong animation film concepts.
