Excellent concepts excellent films. This is especially true for short animation films in which form and content are intertwined like two strands of DNA. A good idea can hit you like lightning, but it takes more to make an idea to actually work. In the HAFF master class “Animation Concept Cooker 2013” you will learn how to develop your ideas into strong animation film concepts under guidance of celebrated animation film professionals.
Most of the time developing concepts for animated shorts is a lonely and painstaking job. If you're lucky your loved one, a good friend or your producer will give you some useful feedback, but most of the time it’s you and a white sheet of paper. Could it be different? Yes, we think it could! In the Animation Concept Cooker (ACC) we use an open approach to concept development. In the workshops you will discuss your ideas with the ACC tutors and fellow students, you will discover new, unexpected angles and get the energy and inspiration you need to create a promising concept.
How does this work? To start off with you submit two basic ideas for a short animation film. If your submission is accepted then you will participate in four workshops:
- Friday 25 January: Introduction to writing for animation and practical exercises by Paul Wells
- Monday 11 February: Concept development by Adriaan Lokman
- Monday 4 March: Concept development by Jakob Schuh
- Monday 18 March: The producers perspective, funding and presentation by Willem Thijssen and Bianca Taal.
The workshops will start at 10:00 and end at 17:00 with a lunch break. The workshops will be located in Utrecht or Amsterdam. Attention: at this moment these dates are tentative and may change. Click here for more information on the tutors.
During the running time of the master class you will use an interactive website in which you can share your work. You are expected to make comments and suggestions to the concepts of your fellow students and to have an open mind when receiving feedback yourself. The language in the meetings and website is Dutch and English. In order to make it possible for our English speaking tutors to read and respond to your concepts an English version must be available.
At the end of the workshops you will make a short video presentation which will be published on the website and accessible to Dutch animation film producers within a restricted timeframe. The ACC will be rounded of with a meet & greet with Dutch animation producers during the HAFF from 20-24 March 2013.
Interested? Then sign up and submit two ideas for short animation films (200-400 words each) with possibly some sketches or artwork. The submitted ideas will stay your intellectual property and used for the ACC only.
We expect master class students to have an academic degree in animation or art (or are on the verge of getting one) and to have some experience with animation film making (as a scriptwriter, storyboard artist, producer, director and/or animator). We admit eight students to the master class. If there are more applicants a selection will be made.
The contribution fee for participants is € 140,- (exclusive of BTW 21%, including lunch and passepartout for the HAFF 20-24 March 2013).
The ACC is organized by the Holland Animation Film Festival in cooperation with the Dutch Filmfund. This master class is organized for the seventh successive time.
